What type of rolling papers are best?

what rolling papers are best
A minute into smoking a freshly rolled joint, it canoes up one side or a big fresh heater falls onto your rug. "What did I do wrong?" you wonder.

Assuming you rolled the joint it well, you likely chose the wrong rolling paper weight!

Most people don’t know that brand and paper type comes SECOND to properly matching the burn rate of paper and contents.

How to choose rolling papers?

  • Estimate the burn rate of your weed

First, have a look at the state of your stash. Is it very dry, average or very wet? Dry weed burns fast and steady. Wet weed and hash burn slowly.

  • Paper thickness is the FIRST thing to choose!
Thicker papers will burn faster and continuously, even if you are not actively pulling on the joint. Thinner papers burn more slowly and will self-extinguish when left alone.

Simply put, the thinner the paper, the slower the burn.
Rolling papers are manufactured in a range of thickness measured in grams per square meter (g/m2 or GSM) which is the single most helpful measurement to make sure you match things up correctly.
  • Matching weights with burn rate

Dry cannabis burns fast and steady, you want to pair it with a paper with a thickness of at or above 20 GSM. This paper weight will keep pace with the weed as it burns down and won’t go out by itself.

Medium-dry weed or medium burning extracts or will burn a bit slower - the 15-18 GSM range is generally adequate for these and is a good choice for everyday use.
For hash and wetter cannabis, papers with a thickness of 14 GSM and less are your best bet. These will burn slowly to match the speed of the contents and also extinguish when you take a rest.

What type of rolling papers are best?

Paper weight can’t hide the sins of a badly rolled joint. Ultra-thin papers can be harder to roll with so if your skills are rusty aim for something you can handle.

Better rolling paper brands will show the exact GSM (paper weight) on the pack while other use less accurate but at least somewhat helpful terms like ‘medium burning’ or ‘extra thin’.

If you’re stuck with a heavier rolling paper, drying out your weed first or mixing it with some drier filler can help increase the burn rate. Please don’t choose tobacco though, it’s simply not worth the awful additional health impact.
