How long does a joint stay fresh?

Having extra joints or pre-rolls on hand is certainly a first world problem, but with some know-how you can keep them fresh, intact and ready for when you’re ready to smoke.

Here are some quick tips on keeping them in top condition!

Storage conditions to keep a joint fresh

58-62% RH at about 20 degrees Celsius is the magic zone for flower whether it’s in bud, ground or rolled format. This makes the fridge a poor choice for storage as it is too cold and too dry.

If you're storing joints for a more than a few days, simply keeping them in an air tight container will help keep it fresh. We recommend an airtight glass or stainless steel container or mylar bag which will help maintain the joints in their present condition well. Choose something that fits the size of your inventory to avoid too much empty airspace – the interior humidity of the container will average out over time so the less air inside the better.

Light is another enemy of cannabis so make sure to store your joints in a UV-proof container or at least away from sunlight and fluorescent lighting.

Small Mylar bags allow you to squeeze out excess air and store multiple joints in a UV proof environment.

Preventing accidents with pre-rolled joints

Sometimes storage is just a matter of making sure your joints don’t get crushed, spilled or full of pocket lint for a few hours or days.

Small holes in the paper caused by accidental puncture can make for a bad smoking experience and crushed joints will burn poorly if it creates loose spots in the middle.

The old standby used to be a cigarette pack or empty mints tin, but depending on what used to be or still is in the container, they add the potential for aroma contamination or other particles to attach to the paper. Additionally, like their plastic counterparts such as the doob-tube or test tube, they just aren’t very stylish.

Our locking sliding tins were specifically made to hold and protect joints while slipping easily into a pocket, bag or purse without having to worry. They look better too.

So...how long will a joint stay fresh?

If you keep pre-rolls in the right condition, they should retain most of their positive qualities for about 12 months. If it still smells good and 'weed-y', this means the terpenes are still there and the joint is probably in great shape.

THC takes a longer time to degrade so chances are it'll still work long after the 12 month mark, it just won't be as pleasant.
